Consequences of Dryland Maize Planting Decisions Under Increased Seasonal Rainfall Variability

چکیده
Shifts in rainfall frequency and intensity can lead to heavy crop loss rainfed agricultural systems. Small-scale farmers who plant with limited resources need carefully select management strategies that are well suited for their environment. Farmers must choose between planting higher-yielding varieties take longer mature lower-yielding be harvested sooner. To better understand the interactions variability, cultivar choice, cropping success, we implement an ecohydrological model accounts variation daily soil moisture converts water stress yield. We apply growing conditions of dryland central Kenya, which is a drought-prone semiarid region spatially heterogeneous rainfall. simulate stochastic rainfall, derive parameters 10-day increments from 30+ year data set. use these properties seasonal availability cultivars different maturation lengths. In agreement past studies, our analysis shows storms becoming more intense less frequent. show maize crops prone deficit part season when requirements highest. Despite potential higher-yielding, late maturing improve total harvest, find early drought-avoidant have lowest likelihood failure. light reduced totals, historical probability failure was now increasing.

متن کاملPlanting scenarios for maize cropping under drought conditions
ABSTRACT Water management is an essential concept for water intensive crop such as maize dealing with water shortage under drought conditions. Maize production is ranked after wheat and barely in Fars province, Iran. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effects of planting methods by conventional and modified planters on maize growth and yield at different irrigation re...
متن کاملEffect of rainfall interannual variability on the stability and resilience of dryland plant ecosystems
[1] Positive feedbacks between vegetation and soil moisture may induce, in arid ecosystems, the emergence of two alternative stable states, corresponding to bare and completely vegetated soil. A new analytical model is developed to investigate this behavior and to study the effects of interannual rainfall variability on the dynamics of bistable ecosystems. When dichotomic Markov noise is used t...
متن کاملDryland Vegetation Functional Response to Altered Rainfall Amounts and Variability Derived from Satellite Time Series Data
Vegetation productivity is an essential variable in ecosystem functioning. Vegetation dynamics of dryland ecosystems are most strongly determined by water availability and consequently by rainfall and there is a need to better understand how water limited ecosystems respond to altered rainfall amounts and variability. This response is partly determined by the vegetation functional response to r...
